About the Host Institution: Sikkim Akademi
Sikkim Akademi, established by the Government of Sikkim, is the apex cultural and literary body of the state, dedicated to preserving and promoting the linguistic, literary, and artistic heritage of Sikkim. It focuses on the holistic development of recognized languages, including all regional languages of the state, along with literature, performing arts, and fine arts.
As part of its mandate, the Sikkim Akademi:
- Promotes cooperation among writers and artists for the enhancement of literary and cultural activities.
- Undertakes scholarly research and documentation in literary and artistic traditions.
- Disseminates information through publications and academic programs.
- Provides support to researchers and cultural organizations.
- Preserves important archival materials, artifacts, and records of historical and cultural value.
- Envisions the establishment of a well-equipped National Library for the state.
About the Library
The Sikkim Akademi Library is a vital repository of the state’s intellectual and cultural history. It houses a rich collection of approximately 10,000 books at present, covering a wide array of disciplines including literature, linguistics, arts, culture, history, philosophy, and social sciences. To enhance library services and user access, the Sikkim Akademi Library is currently in the process of automating its library operations using KOHA, an open-source Integrated Library Management System (ILMS). This will improve cataloging, circulation, and information retrieval, and allow digital access to bibliographic resources, strengthening the Sikkim Akademi role in academic and cultural research. Through its dynamic library services, research initiatives, and cultural programs, Sikkim Akademi continues to serve as a beacon of literary and cultural advancement in the state.
